Text-only knots
Is it possible to describe knots so precisely with text that one can follow the instructions and come up with the right knot? This must be extremely challenging, especially for somewhat involved knots, but one can try.
Take a piece of rope and put it in front of you in a horizontal line. We will keep the left part mostly fixed (the standing end) and will manipulate the right part (the working end).
Now create a 90° bend roughly in the middle by moving the working end upward and away from you. This is rope-up.
Starting from the horizontal position you can also move the rope into a 90° bend by moving it downwards and towards you. This is rope-down.
Let‘s continue to work with the rope-up move. By continuing the turn, bring the rope back towards you on the left side of the 90° bend until it touches the standing end of the rope.
Now there are two options: You can continue the movement over the standing end or under the standing end. For our demonstration we go under the standing end.
This move results in a counter-clockwise underhand loop.
Now take the working end (or wend) and raise it up, turn it back onto itself and thread it through the loop we made. This creates our first knot. Tighten the knot.
