The Ijexá rhythm of Brazil

Ijexá-Agogô rhythms on blackboard

Yesterday, I was introduced to the Ijexá rhythm of Brazil1 by the fabulous Charles Raszl2 in a workshop organized by Clemens Künneth3. We started with the fairly simple pattern dam da-ba dam da-ba using a “deep” clap for the da(m) and a clap on the chest for the ba. For more complexity we added finger snaps after the first quarter notes: da ts-ts da ba.

Once we had mastered the base rhythm, we added the Agogô pattern, which I have no idea how to communicate through ts, ba or da.
