Calisthenics blends strength and beauty
As part of my fitness regime I practice calisthenics – exercises that use your own bodyweight as resistance and maybe some additional tools like a push-up bar, rings or bands. Recently, I was wondering where the term calisthenics comes from, and what it actually means.
According to the directory built-in to macOS:
calisthenics: exercises to achieve bodily fitness and grace of movement; from Greek kallos ‘beauty’ + sthenos ‘strength’ + -ics.
-ics: (forming nouns) denoting arts or sciences, branches of study, or profession.
Which is exactly what it is: You are moving your body in space (which needs strength), and you do control the movement fully. The latter is expressed in the focus of quality reps.
